They announced the basic plot of the spinoff anime back in April. To quote ANN: "The new side story is set in a.t.b.2017. A Knightmare unit made of boys and girls from Zone Eleven are thrown into a military operation with a 5% chance of survival. They must rescue an allied unit left behind on the European warfront." So, it looks like it really doesn't have much - if anything - to do with main plot. Personally, I intend to skip out on it.

No, a lot of random areas were redrawn; he probably spent an hour or two drawing over stuff he didn't need to, probably from not knowing how to use the right tools.
