I rescanned this @ 90 degrees. The 'scratch' in the lower left is a compressed fold in the paper. Also scanned this in using a different scanner profile.

p.s. -- the idea is to see which of the raws is better?..

A lot less dust, but very oversaturated.
Should honestly just let your scanner do auto-adjustment, it's really hard to edit the screening when the level differences are so high.
No real need for 16-bit either.

will try 2 more (8-bit) -- one converted to sRGB, the other w/native Epson 1.8Gamma sRGB.

Why are you using 1.8 gamma anyways. Proper gamma curve tends to be 2.2.
