Seeing from her smile and his patting of her head, the outcome is possibly not a sad one (unless that gift isn't supposed to be given to the one who's patting her).

Or she’s just trying to keep smiling despite her sadness (why would she still have the present, if he had accepted it? And why patting her, in this case?), hence my question.
