We're testing a new image resizer. As long as you stick to non-interlaced PNGs and JPEGs, there should be no practical limit on the size of images that the server can handle; it'll take longer when you upload, but it won't kill the server.
Of course, it doesn't make sense to upload 300 DPI halftoned images at 1200DPI--scan at that res, but scale them down after descreening until it's not just higher-resolution blurriness--but if you have useful stuff at that resolution, it should work now.
