I'm very late to this topic,but I'll vouch for the Brother MFC 6490 CW. It's a A3 scanner/printer, but goes for less than $300 USD and even less when Staples has it on special. I think it has been replaced by the 6710, but for 11 x 17/A3 scans it is a nice deal. Saves a lot of time not having to scan in two parts as you might have to with a smaller letter/A4 scanner.
