Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 at the home of her parents, known as La Casa Azul (The Blue House), in Coyoacán, then a small town on the outskirts of Mexico City and now a district.

His father, Guillermo Kahlo (1871-1941), was born Carl Wilhelm Kahlo, in Pforzheim Germany, son of Henriette Kaufmann and Jakob Heinrich Kahlo. Herself Frida maintained that her father was of Jewish-Hungarian descent, 3 but researchers have shown that her parents were not Jewish, but Lutheran alemães.4 Guillermo Kahlo arrived in Mexico in 1891, at 19 years of age, and then changed its name German, Wilhelm, for the equivalent in Spanish, "Guillermo".

Frida's mother, Matilde Calderón y Gonzalez, was a devout Catholic of indigenous origin and espanhola.5 Frida's parents were married soon after the death of the first wife of Guillermo, during the birth of her second child. Although the marriage was very unhappy, Guillermo and Matilde had four daughters, with Frida the third. She had two older half sisters. Frida emphasized that grew up in a world full of women. For most of his life, however, Frida remained close to the father.

In 1913, six, Frida contracted polio, the first of a number of diseases, accidents, injuries and operations that suffered lifelong. Polio left an injury to his right foot, so it earned the nickname Frida palo Paw (ie Frida wooden leg). Started to wear pants after long skirts and exotic, which became one of his personal brands.

Unlike many artists, not Kahlo began to paint early. Although his father had painting as a hobby, Frida was not particularly interested in art as a career.

Between 1922 and 1925 attends the National Preparatory School in the Federal District of Mexico and attends drawing classes and modeling.

In 1925, at age 18, learns the engraving technique with Fernando Fernandez. Then suffered a serious accident. A streetcar, in which he was traveling, collided with a train. The bumper of one of pierced his back vehicles, through his pelvis and left through the vagina, causing severe bleeding. Frida was many months between life and death in the hospital, had to operate various parts and rebuild entirely his body, which was all drilled. This accident forced her to wear orthopedic corsets of various materials, and she came to paint some of them (like fabric plaster vest entitled The Departure Column ').

During his long convalescence, he began to paint, using his father's paint box and easel adapted to bed.

In 1928, entered the Mexican Communist Party and met muralist Diego Rivera, who marries the following year. Under the influence of her husband's work, adopted the use of large color areas and simple, a style deliberately recognized as naive. Sought in his art affirm the Mexican national identity, so it had adopted too often themes of folklore and folk art of Mexico.

Between 1930 and 1933 spends most of his time in New York and Detroit, with Rivera. Between 1937 and 1939, Leon Trotsky received in his Coyoacan home.

In 1938 André Breton qualifies his work of surrealist in an essay he wrote for the exhibition of Kahlo in the gallery Julien Levy of New York. However, she later stated: They thought I was a Surrealist, but I was not. Never painted dreams. He painted my own reality.

In 1939 exhibited in Paris at Renon et Colle Gallery. From 1943 classes at La Esmeralda school, DF (Mexico).

In 1953 the Contemporary Art Gallery of that city organizes an important exhibition in his honor.

Some of his early works include Self-Portrait in a Velvet Dress (1926), Portrait of Miguel N. Lira (1927), Portrait of Alicia Galant (1927) and Portrait of My Sister Cristina (1928).

Married at age 22 with Diego Rivera in 1929, a tumultuous marriage, as both had strong temperaments and extramarital affairs. Kahlo, who was bisexual, had an affair with Leon Trotsky after separating from Diego. Rivera openly accepted the Kahlo's relationships with women, even though they were married, but did not accept the cases of wife with men. Frida discovers that Rivera had a relationship with her younger sister, Cristina, for many years, which revolted. She caught the sexual relationship and, in an act of rage, cut off all his hair, which was long enough in front of the mirror. Her sister had six children with her ex-husband and Frida never forgave her.

After that another tragedy in his life, separates it and live with new loves men and women, but in 1940 joins again Diego. The second marriage was tempestuous as the first, marked by violent fights. Upon returning to her husband, Frida built a house like his, next to the house where they had lived. This house was connected to the other by a bridge, and they lived as husband and wife, but without living together. They were in her house or in his, at dawn.

Although more than once impregnated Frida never had children because the accident punched committed her uterus and left serious consequences, which made it impossible to carry a pregnancy to the end, having had many abortions.

He tried several times to commit suicide with knives and hammers.

On July 13, 1954, Frida Kahlo, who had contracted a strong pneumonia, was found dead. His death certificate records pulmonary embolism as the cause of death. But do not rule out the hypothesis that died of overdose (accidental or not) because of the large number of remedies that took. The last entry in his diary, saying "I hope that my departure is happy, and I hope never to return - Frida", allows the possibility of suicide. His body was cremated, and his ashes are deposited in an urn in his former home, now Museo Frida Khalo.6

Blue House, the museum [edit | edit source]
Four years after his death, his family house known as the "Blue House" becomes the Frida Kahlo Museum. Frida Kahlo, recognized both for his work and for his personal life, wins retrospective of his works, with objects and unpublished documents, and photographs, drawings, clothes and books.

In popular culture [edit | edit source]
In 1986, Paul Leduc directed the film "Frida Kahlo, living nature", mounted as Frida memorabilia collage before his death.7
In 1992 he was mentioned in the song "Foot" by Adriana Calcanhotto.
In 2002, under the direction of Julie Taymor, was released the film Frida, which tells the story of the painter, played by actress Salma Hayek. The feature film also has the presence of Alfred Molina, playing Diego Rivera.
In 2008, Coldplay released the album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, whose title is inspired by a Frida frame, also titled "Viva La Vida" and that also entitles the main disco song. According to lead singer Chris Martin, the title was chosen due to the optimism of Frida, even with mishaps covered by the artist, to exalt life in that table. She dressed poorly with poor clothing, even though a relatively large amount of money.
In 2010 he was honored by Google with a stylized doodle of his self-portrait.
