Still don't know how to paint with illustrator >_>
What tools do I need to make anime vectors? I just used brush & pencil => livepaint ._.
not bad for a first go...
personally i work mostly with the pen tool and paths
probably the most awkward/time consuming way to do it, but i like the control it gives me

other stuff it'd be useful to learn for anime vectors are things like compound paths, blends and proper use of transparency and feathering effects

i'm sure there are people on this board who are a lot better at anime vectors than me who could give you better advice though
I can't use pen tool well.. that's a brain killer >_<
Same..only thing that kept me away from learning to vector is the damn pen tool..can't understand how those weird lines work >_>
it's actually not that hard. the pen tool comes with some companion tools. add anchor point, remove anchor point and, best of all, in order to make the 'weird lines work'.... convert anchor point (this actually allows you to bend the lines to give you curves)

plus with the paths (shapes) you create with the pen tool, you can add a stroke in order to create lines or a fill to add colour (or do both at once)

it's strange to read that people can't get to grips with it...
i honestly didn't take that long to get the hang of it...

funnily enough, someone who just happens to lurk in the same irc channel as me posted 5 of my earliest completed vectors last year...
tbh, none of them are particularly good imo and i actually cringe when i see them... but i make it a point to try to keep my completed vectors, or vectors where i actually did something right, or learned something....

the vectors are (just in case anyone's interested)

since i uploaded the rest of my vectors myself, the rest are in my user profile
I've only done vectors with photoshop with the pen tool... but I've only done 2.
Photoshop? How well does that work? I've only ever used Illustrator and Inkscape for vectors.

It's quite frustrating but since I haven't done it with anything else I can't really compare it to anything. Would think that illustrator is better and easier since it's pretty much made for it unlike photoshop.
Here's the 2 vectors that I've come up with ps (other is based on my drawing, other on my friends drawing)

Azarel, the vector-maker...

Yesterday I tried using pen tool, and, no. Lasso is better.
But both are so boring, so I prefer brush!

asterixvader can use Photoshop quite well.

lol, maybe not. I prefer to use photoshop in other ways.
Maybe if someone needs to continue discussing about vectors, it should be taken to the forums?
lol, people looked at the 5 links i posted and suddenly what little credibility i had with vectoring suddenly just disappeared :3

but anyway... i remember one or two vectoring tutorials dealing with photoshop
I'm used to use paint tool SAI, so I did similar way. The post image took me 3 hours to draw edges with my bamboo tablet.
Problem of illustrator for me is painting :/
I was about to port it into PS or SAI many times while looking for how to paint it (´・ω・`)
the pen tool allows you to paint

So you do have a bamboo! Bamboos are so nice, I have one too. And they are cheap.
I use the brush tool to color everything, including shades and highlights, but I don't know if that's what you're looking for.

if you have a little bit of time tomorrow, i'll see about giving you a little tutorial about usage of the pen tool, if you want to that is...
anyone else who wants a little tutorial about the adobe illustrator pen tool will be welcome to join in too...
i'll be lurking in the irc channel (Nick is Aurica_Nestmille)
