I upload this to compare PhotoShop's image merging & PanaVue's (auto). In my opinion ps did it much better with the images which are flat enough, it causes less deformation than PanaVue. On the other hand, Its tolerance is worse than PanaVue. For instance, the particial scans of dakimakura will likely get nothing with ps, but PanaVue will anyway give you a result (maybe very weird).

Especially if you check the option "Reposition only" in the photomerge in photoshop, it will cause no deformation. It applies to the images which are exactly matched, most of paper scan can meet the demand (Or you can use it then fix some details by hand, it isn't too difficult).
PanaVue tries to keep the top-left image straight, and adapts all other images to it. Photoshop seems to prefer to balance all images instead. One difference I did notice is on the hand - the lines seem slightly blurrier on this picture. (Also, what's with the very jaggy edges?)
Remember both were written with photos in mind. Its the same reason Content Aware Fill doesn't work as promised on anime/manga.
Actually, PanaVue's mosaic mode is specifically intended for stitching scans of images larger than the scanner (and it works very nicely with that, since paper doesn't shear the way fabric does).
