In order to avoid any trace of color banding when applying color adjustment curve, I convert to 16bit, run an extremely light filter, then apply color adjustment, and finally convert back to 8bit.

...But that in turn put an extra 3mb on it from the color dithering.

I think the result justifies the means, and in this case file size (which honestly isn't even that bad anyway).
