My guess is some kind of ritual. (hidden for length) spoiler ... demon or spirit Summonation. Floating masks are possessed by one or more petitioned entities. That's probably the limit of their presence in the corporeal plane. What they hope to do with them is anyone's guess really. But Ha ha I really don't know. I've never seen this anime/manga or played the game. But if I had to guess by what I see in the pic then that's what it looks like. I could be wrong.
