This wouldn't be our cherished Nanoha franchise if it was anything else! (¯o¯)
would be nice if it was a grade school boy rival for once but after all otaku would implode if that happened.
Well, when I found out about spoiler, I felt quite disappointed too. I mean, I like girls a lot (especially in mangas and animes), but I'd have liked more if it was a bit more balanced between male and female characters, indeed.

And with a good reason, it would be horrible. A high school boy or older is acceptable, but not a grade school boy.

Do you remember Erio?
How cool would it be to see an anime version of Oliver twist or tom sawyer or treasure island or pinocchio. Unfortunately that will never be why because of these main characters are grade school boys and Otaku can't stand the thought of little boy characters in the industry.
Tom Sawyer no Bōken : 1980 (https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=439)
Kashi no Ki Mokku (Pinocchio): 1972 (https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1408)
Pinocchio yori Piccolino no Bōken: 1976-1977 (https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2129)
Takarajima (Treasure Island): 1978-1979 (https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2131)

I couldn't find any anime for Oliver Twist, though. But you have so, so many animes based upon Western books, even if they were aired some decades ago...
I mean to me its like japan nowadays is trying to pretend elementary school boys characters don't exist for whatever reason. Remember jim hawking from outlaw star or yahiko myojin from rurouni kenshin or syaoran li from cardcaptor sakura or toboe from wolf's rain. It would be nice to see a grade school boy character like them again don't know if that will happen though.
I think little boys are getting more frequent, while little girls are dying out in the lates years, actually.
Can you get me some examples
