I wonder if the artist is trying to portray a "uh, do we really have to do this again?" kind of feeling from niko and maki about the yuri themes involving them. The expressions don't quite make sense to me otherwise.

I see what you mean. They seem more aware of their surroundings than paying attention to each other (though Maki more than Nico). It does give me that awkward AV-vibe.

This is honestly pretty great if that is what the artist was actually going for with this piece.
