It depends how you romanize. The 'chi' sound can be romanized as 'chi' or 'ti', with the Japanese themselves often picking the latter, while most sane people use 'chi'. Same principal as 'tsu', which they often type as 'tu', despite there being an obvious ess sound in the syllable.

I've always figured that they use "ti" (and worse, "sya", etc), just for the sake of mangling our alphabet for the fun of it.

lol yeah I harbour deep suspicions about that too. They just like to annoy us :o
