Welll, I shouldn't be responding to 8 month to 1.4 year old comments

but it's more or less explained at the end of the second season

I know this is a 2 month old comment, but I'll answer anyway.
Has two seasons, three alternative story mangas, a prequel manga and another anime project that hasn't been explained yet.
And C.C. looks totally like Yuuko in this.

They announced the basic plot of the spinoff anime back in April. To quote ANN: "The new side story is set in a.t.b.2017. A Knightmare unit made of boys and girls from Zone Eleven are thrown into a military operation with a 5% chance of survival. They must rescue an allied unit left behind on the European warfront." So, it looks like it really doesn't have much - if anything - to do with main plot. Personally, I intend to skip out on it.

Oh, I forgot that.
I will wait to see opinions of it after airing, but it looks as mecha overload.
