++ is a programming term - something++ is the same as saying something = something + 1 - essentially a shortcut to increment something.

engineers need to know how to program too ;) I guess if you're mechanical or civil engineering it's not as important, but electrical is tied to computers so closely these days :)

Mechanical Engineers don't need to program anything.
