Note that there's some blurring because of the warping used to fit the pieces together. Resizing and warping have an inherent blurring effect, which is effectively halving the resolution. I think the only real fix is to scan at twice the DPI; we don't scan these ourselves so there's not much we can do about it.

Blurry interpolation algorithm also blurs noise, so a little sharpening should do the trick, I guess.

But if you are already on the brink of losing high frequency components with the source (really sharp edges already), I recommend 2x upsampling before applying these warping operations.
