spoilerI'm pretty sure it's as aurica said, in the first AC, the ring finger needed to be removed in order to use the hidden blade.

Yes that's true because spoilerin Assassins Creed II, Leonardo Da Vinci has to modify the hidden blade for Ezio so it can be used without having to remove his finger.

Upon further reading....spoiler if you read the codex, it was Altair's idea anyway. There are quite a few things in the codex that Leonardo claims credit for.
