I'm only using a hair dryer & a cutter. if heat changed the colors, then we couldn't stitch spread pages well.
<- hairdryer+cutter too. Just don't keep the hairdryer in the same spot for too long or the paper will become ondulated (´Д`)ハァ…
I used to debind manga in a microwave. 30-40 seconds should be enough for most.
I use Pireze's way. Hair Dryer along with a razor to clean up scraps and it's pretty straight forward.
Thanks, I'll follow pireze's advice of getting a backup before debinding.
(Actually I ordered one, but my deputy agent seems to have forgotten that japan is GMT+9, not +8 and missed the auction altogether @$^#$#&&$##$!!! )

debind them?...
but why...
but why...
To make a better scan. Forcing pages straight without debinding yields poor results.natsumenatsu said:

it's... it's... horrible...
it's like... destroying a prototype figure just to make the mold for mass production...

Many many of the scans here are from debinded artbooks and doujin illustration books. You should actually be pretty happy :)
realizing that...
sacrificing one for the sake of many...
it somehow makes feel uneasy to download scans...

Your avatar is actually from a de-bound book :Pnatsumenatsu said:

Err, no competent deputy is going to mix up the time of day--who's that incompetent?
well... they do look neat...
demo... if it was just me... i'd say i'm fine with it though...
after realizing that they have to undergo debinding...
do the debinded books get to be rebinded at all?

It's possible... I think? Though I doubt anyone who unbinds their books rebinds them. I scan a lot of manga, and I don't rebind the books. Though I usually have a second copy, but I can't say the same for those that debind and scan rare doujin, since they're harder to come by, especially those that come straight from Comiket. I haven't scanned any of the doujin or artbooks I've gotten from Comiket. But as many have said, the majority of scans on moe and many other image board sites come from debinding and scanning.natsumenatsu said:

i stumbled upon this site when i was looking for a cover of the planetarian visual novel...
exploring a little more... it was artbook heaven...
although... recently the LQ option was taken out kind of saddens me...
and now realizing about how the scans are made... i felt kind of disheartened...

Most of these services run with two men: A domestic agent who runs a b2c shop, and a japan-side guy who actually buys and sends things. And communication and liability problems occur.
So I think I've had enough with them, gotta find a larger firm to do the deputy for me..
You can rebind the books that are stapled (like korune's books) but i don't bother usually. Once i've scanned and edited i only look at the digital copy anyway ( ̄▽ ̄)ノ_彡☆バンバン!!. The original is stashed just in case.
Never mind, it's the downloads from visitors like you that make the scanner's sacrifices worthwhile.natsumenatsu said:

PS: I'm working on a better version of the planetarian poster.
there are many rare artbooks cost 3000~5000 yen here. most of them are came from admin2's pocket.

and that emoticon "( ̄▽ ̄)" gives me a feeling of doubtful assurance that you take care of them after storage...

a planetarian poster?...
oh... by the way...
yoroshiku...
I use a hot iron and a razor blade back when I debinded books

Just out of curiosity, blow dryer or heat gun (the paint removal kind).
Is there much difference in its use? I can imagine the additional heat from the heat gun may cause more problems than necessary... aside from burning yourself on the metal nozzle of course.
Heat guns are more tended to be higher temps, ranging from 100(37ºC)-200ºF(93ºC) and the higher end models goes to 700ºF(371ºC)+. Now if you have read Fahrenheit 451, paper ignites at 451ºF. I can't say what kind of glues artbooks and doujins uses, but using hot glue's temperature as an example, it melts at 380ºF(193ºC). Anything above 451ºF would start causing burn marks :)
A hair dryer is hot enough to have melted any doujins' glue i've debinded so far. Heat Gun for quicker result ^^
ps: midzki hate reading customary units, so i've translated it into metric for him :)

Fixed that for you.aoie_emesai said:

um... plus heat guns has a lower blow power... so it won't make the objects being heated get blown away... as well as heat is not easily lost under lower air blow...
One question - Why is a cutter needed in the debinding process? Is it because that dry glue still contaminates scanner glass, so we need to cut the spine area off?
kiowa
How to debind books?
Also, I wonder whether hot wind from dryers would make inks change color, anyone have ideas about this, or am I just worrying too much?
