The theme is to be ‘Japan’? In that case I have produced an original character based on the mythical queen of Japan, Himiko.
I created it by combining the images of a jade magatama (curved bead) with a miko (shrine maiden). Although the clothing is a completely different design to that of real miko, it creates an image of a miko's costume, and I think that this is due to the powerful image of the red and white coloring.
A kimono-like design goes well with straight black hair so despite the radical elements, here and there, I think the picture comes together well. The background of flowing lines, resembling clouds or rivers, is a parody of the paintings on traditional sliding doors. I believe that the Japanese have enjoyed distortion and simplification in their art since
ancient times.
