The better method would be to just make a layer mask (non-destructive) and mask out the areas on the top level you want to keep detailed with your brush opacity of choice. This way you won't have to abuse your history states if you make a mistake with the eraser (destructive), and makes it easier to tweak how much detail you want retained if you change your mind late in the process.
