yes, the art from the original games was quite bad and the art from the first season managed to be a huge improvement over the art from the games while still being quite bad itself.

Oh... How tragic, a lot of people seem to like the anime series.
I didn't know Higurashi was originally a game. Is it for PC or something?

they started out as PC games back in 2002 but updated versions with additional story and improved art have been released for the PS2 and NDS

There is only two anime seasons (and the Rei ovas, which doesn't really adds to the original story). There are like 8 mangas, based on the same stories from the anime but with greater detail and depth. Just try not to get too confused at first, it'll happen after watching the end of the first arc and then watching the second one.
About Higurashi's first season's art, it really isn't that bad. It's kind of cute, and if you are into violence then it's tons more graphic that Kai (Kai it's a little more psychological). Of course Kai's and Rei's (judging from the intro) art is way better, but the first season is cute in it's own way. Oh, and it has some very iconic scenes you must watch (Rika !!!, Satoko !!!, Nails !!!).

There are a lot of animus and games I don't want to watch or play, I'm only interested in their artwork and/or music.

The Higurashi game and animu soundtracks were all quite good. By the way, I still don't feel like I want to spend time on them...

I'm not sure whether it's really Sakai Kyuuta, or rather Kikuchi Youko (artist participating in Umineko anime production).

Since this cover comes from some cross-over between Higurashi and Umineko, I believe it's actually drawn by Ms. Kikuchi instead of Ms. Sakai. Their styles are similar, but the characters' eyes are typical for Ms. Kikuchi style.

These images you commented on are supposed to be scanned from same book, Sakai Kyuuta's artbook. So they should be done by him/her.

Or course the pooling could be wrong, but I personally don't think so as all these scans, among with lots of others, came together.

If you have that book on hand you can double-check.
