Nope. CG's are originally done in HR. So ingame they are actually downscaled.

Proof? As far as I'm aware, the CGs ripped directly from the game are 1024x576. While their game engine upscales with Bilinear which makes everything rather soft if not running native.

You can go check exhentai or somewhere else. It has two sizes of CGs, 576p and 1152p.

Thanks. Do I need to say more, @Cyberbeing? JFYI, I happen to program VN's myself.
Ah, my mistake then. I didn't realize the CGs were actually a mixture of 576p for generic scenes (as well as backgrounds, character overlays, UI) with high quality 1152p used only for key event scenes. It's too bad they didn't master the entire game at high resolution.
It's very common in VNs. They put in high res cg for mainly scenes where zoom effects are involved.

Is it really? The only time I've seen CGs larger than the default game resolution are cases where you have a panamorphic or stick poster aspect ratio for panning scenes, which is indeed somewhat common with certain developers. For zoom scenes, most usually just do it anime-style and upscale a common low resolution CG.

This is the first time I've seen a VN double the resolution of all key event CGs in standard aspect ratio. Even among other Frontwing games, this seems to be the only one which doesn't use a fixed resolution for standard aspect ratio event CGs (based on exhentai galleries). It seems more like a one-time-only experiment on their part:

Makai Tenshi Djibril -Episode 3- (2008): 800x600 (all CG)
Hoshiuta (2008): 800x600 (all CG)
Hoshiuta ~Starlight Serenade~ (2009): 800x600 (all CG)
Makai Tenshi Djibril -Episode 4- (2010): 1024x576 (all CG)

Grisaia no Kajitsu (2011): 1024x576 (general CG) + 2048x1152 (h-scene + key events)

Sengoku Tenshi Djibril (2011): 1024x576 (all CG)
Grisaia no Meikyuu (2012): 1024x576 (all CG)
Pure Girl (2012): 1280x720 (all CG)
Grisaia no Rakuen (2013): 1280x720 (all CG)
Innocent Girl (2014): 1280x720 (all CG)
I can attest that it's common in eroge to have a dozen of event CG to be in high resolution.

Some even have all event CG and sprite in high resolution (1080p) but game resolution still native 720p.

And I know because I'm doing Kii.re Project
I've seen VNs with high-resolution sprites, but which studios commonly have event CGs which cannot be viewed in native resolution within the game (i.e. no built-in/advertised resolution setting which matches the actual CG resolution, no built-in zoom/pan functionality within CG viewer)?

Oh my! I better bookmark that.

Ahhh I wanted to do these for a long time but I don't know how D:
I fail at tool hunting. >.>
Cyberbeing: pretty sure you just missed them or maybe they're not on exhentai.
I remember seeing some nice cg from Innocent Girl that was at least 1440p.

Grisaia no Kajitsu seems to have something like 155 of 311 (~50% of all event CGs) at 2048x1152, yet the VN is marketed as 1024x576 and doesn't even support 2048x1152 resolution by default.

Innocent Girl only seems to have 18 of 409 (~4.4% of all event CGs) at 1440p, none being h-scenes, which I don't find all that strange.

Essentially what I'm asking here, if is there are other VNs like Grisaia no Kajitsu which specifications only support lower resolutions, yet contain a large number of event CGs (say >25%) at high resolution which are always downscaled in-game? VN developers which subjectively cause you to always prioritize CG-rips for high-res assets, rather than using the built-in CG/Memory viewer within the VN itself?
Yes, again, many games do it. For example Favorite doesn't even store any native resolution cg in their games, they're all 4x bigger than what the games' resolutions are.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. If any more obvious ones come to mind, could you PM me WtfCakes?

It would be interesting once Kii.re goes live, if this information about VN developer's resolution preferences for various assets, along with metadata about how it was originally presented in the VN compared to the direct rip (native, downscaled, upscaled, zoom, pan, shake, rotate) could be documented each time a CG set is uploaded.
Search tag game_cg in the reverse order. I remember we argued about game_cg resolution and old game CGs on this site must be bigger than game resolution. (I once deleted all upscaled ones. Remains must be original resolution)

That's nice. I'm troubling to tell what we need to make a VN for an artist, a writer, and others. It'll be great help.
