Third time's the charm maybe?
I can't trust Jun Maeda writing after trainwreck called Charlotte. IMO Angel Beats kinda meh near ending. Jun Maeda better stay writing VN. It was miracle KyoAni could adapt most part of Clannad into 48 episode.
I'll be honest, his works really only work well when the supernatural stuff is subtle for the most part, and that's not the case here.
Add to that the main girl is already screaming it's gonna be crap.
I think his work suffers a lot when forced into a shorter format. The reason Clannad works is because it's so long. There's time to build up those character relationships. Maeda-san can't seem to adapt his style to work in a shorter amount of episodes. Angel Beats and Charlotte both start out well then crash at the end. Especially Charlotte..... it's like he realizes at the end he can't fit everything and instead of going back and re-structuring just throws the rest of his ideas at the wall and lets them splatter.

I still love the guy. It's only partially his fault after all. If AB and Charlotte were allowed to run for 26 episodes or longer I think they'd be remembered much more fondly and would work more like Maeda intended. There is a place for both long and short shows like this but nobody ever lets the long ones get made.
It doesn't help that Clannad etc. are based on "proven" VNs and adapted by veteran anime screenplay writers, while AB/Charlotte being original and having screenplay written by Maeda himself. There are major differences bwtween the two mediums in terms like pacing.
He should only be making anime if they're 2 cour. He has clearly shown he can't do 1 cour anime properly. To be fair most 1 cour anime in general are not that great, except if they get a second season. 95% of the time you get either a rushed story or an incomplete story.
