Like midzki said, hentai is a pretty bad swearing word. Rather than commonly known meaning of "pervert", it's actually closer to "porn retards". Definitely not a word that keep your hands still when someone said it to you. Ero or 18Strict (age wise) is more preferred

"H" (pronounced ecchi in Japanese) derived from the word "H"entai means the same, but doesn't imply sickness (hentai implies sickness)

The error isn't in the word, but in assuming words retain their meaning in different languages. Words often shift meaning when they're borrowed into other languages. (A king lives in a マンション, not a college student, and if you call someone マスター you'll get some very strange looks...)

The fact it's insulting Japanese doesn't changed. At least you shouldn't use this word in front of Japanese.

I think English people should learn more about Japanese. As the word by itself express an unusual attitude, I think the "pervert" translation is kind of wrong. I'm sure there is English word that have a strong meaning and are not used quite often. Well that's my opinion as a non-English.

I doubt you'll find much direct translation from language to language.
