255976 2988.1 K+ K-tasu 桃から生まれた Momo kara umareta (Born from a Peach) How do you do, my name is K-tasu. I am most honored to have been given the opportunity to participate in this wonderful exhibition. The subject for this picture is based on the story of Momotaro (Peach Boy), which originates from my home prefecture of Okayama is famous for. There are many theories concerning the origins of the story of Momotaro and it is still a subject for debate. One of the theories is that Momotaro was really a girl, and personally, this is the one I like best so I used it for this illustration. My motives are not entirely pure, but I am sure that a lot of people will approve. I would like to talk more about this illustration but I think I will lose control if I do, so I must be prudent. Thank you for bothering to read my comments. I hope that we will be able to meet again through my illustrations. WtfCakes 05/31/13 Revert

Adults tend to dislike the rain and humidity of the rainy season but if you put up an umbrella and go for a walk, you will be able to see all sorts of things that you will never come across at any other time. I decided to combine both of these motifs in a single work. The seasons keep changing, only to begin again. Repeatedly. When you think about it, the seasons are quite strange. I spent ages thinking about what to draw but in the end I did not choose a particular season, instead I used the theme of cycle of the seasons. As I was working on this, I realized that it seemed to be anticipating spring and the main reason for this is probably because it was still cold at that time. This year in I was particularly looking forward to spring. WtfCakes 05/31/13 Revert

This is an image of the summer holidays. In Japan, the children have to attend school on special schooldays during the holiday. The girls shown here were let out at lunchtime and what had started out as a short diversion on the way home, ended up with them becoming soaking wet. They had nothing to change into and were hungry... Still they just laughed it off. That is the feeling I aimed for. I hope that when you see this you will feel that you have been playing with them. I come from Kyoto where the most beautiful season is autumn so I used this for my theme this year. The finished result resembles the valley of Takao which lies to the north of Kyoto. I wanted to create an image in which the motif of maple leaves woven into the brocade appears to overlap with the real leaves that are falling from the trees. In order to achieve this, I exaggerated the spread of the hem of the kimono so it would catch as many of the leaves as possible. My offering of maple leaves may not equal Michizane’s poem of supplication to the gods, but I hope that it will remain in the hearts of everybody who sees it. Thank you very much for inviting me to take part in this event again. WtfCakes 05/31/13 Revert

In Japanese, four seasons is pronounced, ‘shiki’ so I used a play on words and depicted ‘four demons’, which is also pronounced ‘shiki’. They are as follows: spring—spirit of the cherry tree, summer—mermaid, autumn—fox demon, and winter—snow woman. Japan is a country where the divisions between the four seasons are clearly delineated, and people enjoy the various features of each one. I am very happy to be able to meet you like this. The theme for this ‘Eshi 100’ exhibition is ‘The Four Seasons of Japan’. The changing seasons in Japan, spring, summer, autumn and winter, all have their own colors. Of these, spring is represented by the pale pink blossoms of the cherry trees and numerous other flowers that bloom in gentle colors. The feeling that I wanted to express in this picture is that of a young baby experiencing its first spring and a woman experiencing spring as a mother for the first time. Does this year’s spring seem gentle to you all? This illustration uses a subject I have never drawn before and its atmosphere is quite different from my usual work. It is filled with lots of sentiment. I will be really happy if you like it, even a little bit. Thank you for looking at it. WtfCakes 05/31/13 Revert

A monster who comes to visit on a snowy night—The Snow Woman. This monster combines the impermanence of melting snow with the wildness of a blizzard. It first appeared in literature in the fifteenth century. Tradition states that it takes the form of a beautiful woman, and I must admit that I have never heard of a snow man. The only snow man I know is the 'abominable snowman’ who is supposed to be a white anthropoid, but that has nothing to do with Japan. I think that the fact that this creature, who is said to visit on snowy nights, is not described as a hideous monster or a violent anthropoid with whom it is impossible to communicate, but rather a beautiful woman is what pulls at the heartstrings of the Japanese. A story about a strange creature who suddenly enters a person’s uneventful life is truly the stuff of manga and moreover, if it is a beautiful woman it fits into a pattern that is popular these days. It is truly a classic pattern that has continued down from the fifteenth century. I think that this is the reason why people still tell the story of the Snow Woman. WtfCakes 05/31/13 Revert

The subject was ‘Japan’s Four Seasons’ so I thought I would combine flowers and a girl; after a lot of thought, I decided to use spider lilies as the flowers. In between ‘invigorating spring’ and ‘hot summer’ there comes the ‘rainy season’ that does not resemble either or them. Most people say that they hate the rainy season, but personally, I like it. For this exhibition I have tried to bring out my personal image of the dampness of the rainy season. ‘Rain, dolls hung up to wish for good weather, a Japanese umbrella, hydrangeas, a tree frog, a snail’, and ‘a young girl’ who thinks that if it is going to feel horrible to get a little wet, she might as well get soaked.’ WtfCakes 05/31/13 Revert
