Dojikan-teki-kakusan-shohi toshiteno shojo-zu (Image of a Girl as Simultaneous DiffusionConsumption)
Concerning Simultaneous Diffusion Consumption
The original otaku culture consisted of consumers who valued historical contexts centered on the sub-culture, but with the increase in the speed of internet connections, many of the consumers could not keep up with the proliferation, reproduction and diffusion, giving rise to a new style of simultaneous reproduction/diffusion consumer with no historical elements.
The content of a single site is paraphrased (musically rather than rhetorically) then simultaneously and repeatedly segmented, transformed, and fused, its consumption rate increasing. It is a wonderful yet detestable situation, but one that can only continue to accelerate.
Concerning the image of the girl.
There has been so much discussion on the subject of young girls that I will refrain from adding to it here. |

Ryugari no haru matsuri - oka mau kisetsu (Dragon Hunt Spring Festival — The Season When the Cherry Blossom Falls)
Hello, my name is Itoh Ben.
I am very honored to be able to participate in this event again.
This year the themes are ‘Japan’ and ‘seasons’ so I decided to use my favorite season, spring, to enlarge upon these.
I used the dragon, a monster from Japanese legend, as the main subject, giving the characters in the picture wings like an angel and having them carry swords, as is typical in my work.
However, it was difficult to do. Of course, it goes without saying that the actual illustration was hard, but in particular, I seemed to spend an awful lot of time thinking about the composition.
As well as it being difficult to create, I also added the characters from last year’s work and I hope that those of you who have last year’s catalogue will look and check this out.
Perhaps it is because it was such a struggle to create, or because I spent so much time working on it, but I think that this is my favorite picture in recent years.
Isn’t cherry blossom great? It’s love! Viva Japan!
Lots of things happened last year, but even so, I still love Japan.
If people like this picture, then nothing could give me greater happiness.
Thank you very much. |

ググっても出てこなかつたので自信ないですが;
How do you do? My name is mai nanaca.
The theme this year is ‘the four seasons’.
I named this work in homage to a haiku poem by MASAOKA Shiki: ‘Spilling from heaven, One following another, The cherry blossom’ but using a free style.
...I was sure that she wrote a poem like this, but no matter how long I googled it, I could not find it so I am no longer confident.
Err...recently the popularity of the manga, Chihayafuru, has led to a renewed interest in Japanese poetry, such as haiku or tanka, which incorporate expressions of the scenery of the four season’s within a short verse.
Words change with times and many of these old poems are now incomprehensible unless you have a dictionary to hand, but I think that our hearts, which allow us to recognize beautiful things as being beautiful, remains unchanged in both past and present. I will be delighted if you can feel this in my work.
To change the subject, I was a member of the poetry card club at junior and senior high school, so I am delighted to see more people interested in the subject as a result of the heroine ‘Chihaya’ in the manga I mentioned earlier.
Poetry card games are fun! Please try them. |

The theme is ‘Japan’s four seasons’ so I have chosen to illustrate ‘spring’ and ‘winter’. The season of snow has come to an end and the Miko (shrine maiden) of winter is settling down for sleep while the Miko of spring is opening the buds to fill the trees with cherry blossom. The cascading petals of the cherry blossom resemble snow so I have fused spring and winter in this illustration.
In actual fact, the air in this season is filled with huge amounts of cedar pollen...
This is an analogue illustration that was created using paintbrushes, an airbrush and toothbrushes. |

The Pillow Book
Among the oldest and most famous essays in the Japanese language is Sei Shonagon’s ‘The Pillow Book’. In the first section it describes the beauty of Japan’s four seasons. It states that akebono (dawn) is the most attractive hour in spring, the sound of the word akebono expressing the unique rhythms of the Japanese language. The four girls in this picture symbolize the most attractive aspects of each season: the sun rising through a band of cloud in spring, the dancing fireflies at night in summer, the wild geese flying through the sunset in autumn and the falling snow on a winter morning. |

Kabushima Island in Hachinohe City or Tsubakishima Island in Rikuzentakata City are famous breeding grounds of the black-tailed gull and as they are close to my hometown,I often used to visit them.
They were affected by the earthquake and tsunami last year.
But despite this, the gulls returned again this year the same as every year. I was extremely moved to see this new life and the gulls protecting their families in the midst of the desolation.

Hello, my name is Misa and I am an illustrator.
The theme for this, the second exhibition, is ‘Japan’s Four Seasons’,so I decided to use summer.
I drew this picture depicting ‘the strangeness of a summer’s night, when it is difficult to tell if things are real or whether you are dreaming—what do you think?
Personally, I feel that round windows are very typical of Japan, so I used one as a motif in this illustration, and of course, the girl is wearing a kimono. Although the subject is a person, I think that I have succeeded in also giving her a fairylike appearance. ^^

I would like to express my gratitude for being offered this valuable opportunity. My name is MIKEOU.
When I participated in the ‘Eshi 100 - Contemporary Japanese Illustration’ exhibition last year, I drew a shrine maiden at sunset, but then I really like shrine maidens! For that reason I have used the same subject, although changing the theme and orientation somewhat.
I thought it would be fantastic and cute if a shrine maiden were to perform a holy dance on water while the cherry blossom falls around her. Today, we only see shrine maidens during the new year festivities but wouldn’t it be great if we were able to have more opportunities to see their activities at various festivals, or in the neighborhood, etc...
I plan to draw many more shrine maidens in the future. I will be happy if you like this work even a little bit. Thank you very much. |

Shoji haru (Repapering the Sliding Doors)
The theme this time is ‘The Four Seasons of Japan’; I like red so I immediately chose autumn, but next I asked myself what subject would make people think of Japan. That is when I noticed a dictionary of seasonal words for poetry. Looking inside there was an entry for ‘papering doors’, which is done in mid-autumn in preparation of the cold of winter. I do not remember, but it might well have been autumn when the sliding doors were repapered during my childhood. I used to like wetting the old paper with the shower. I also enjoyed diluting the glue with water and then applying a thin coat to the door with a brush. The custom of performing simple everyday tasks like this in preparation of the coming season, lets us appreciate the season we are currently enjoying. While drawing this picture, I realized that expressing the seasons is another way of expressing Japan. This year’s theme is really wonderful. |

The theme is The Four Seasons of Japan’ and so I have drawn a Heian Period (794-1185) dancing girl, including all the seasonal descriptions that are listed in the introduction to Makura-no-soshi, which opens with the passage, ‘In spring it is the dawn...,
From the golden clouds to the girl's costume, I have stressed the Japanese aspects of the picture. I will be very happy if I have succeeded in capturing some of the beauty of the four seasons in my drawing. |

Hello, I’m Vampire Killer.
I am very honored to be invited to take part in this event!
The subject of this work is a girl with fox ears.
At the moment I live in a place that does not get much snow but I originally come from the snow country, so I felt quite nostalgic as I drew the snow scene in this picture.
The title was added after I finished the work, but it is very apt for the picture.
(Konkon means both heavy snowfall and describes the cry of the fox). |

I was invited to participate in this event again this year, but upon being given the theme of ‘Japan’s four seasons’ to work on, I spent a long time wondering what to do. I could not make up my mind which of the wonderful four seasons Japan enjoys to use and what scenery to feature as the subject. After a lot of thought, I settled on Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture. I happened to have been there shortly before the Great East Japan Earthquake and also visited the towns of Ishinomaki and Kesennuma that suffered such terrible damage during the disaster. While I was there I liked to look out of the window of the inn where I was staying on Matsushima and enjoy the wonderful view. It is definitely worthy of being described as one of Japan’s ‘three greatest views’. I hope that I have been able to capture even a small part of its beauty to deliver to you all. I also drew it in the hope that you might visit the area one day. For that reason I chose to depict it in the fall, when Matsushima is at its most beautiful, and I added some white chrysanthemums in the foreground. White chrysanthemums seem ephemeral and melancholy, but in the language of flowers, they stand for ‘fidelity’ and ‘truth’. If I have succeeded in depicting a faithful image of Japan, the true Japan, then I will be very happy. |

Natsu no yoru (Summer Niaht)
As the theme was Japan's four seasons, I chose my favorite season, summer. Although I say it is my favorite, I come from Okinawa where we do not experience the ‘cherry blossom viewing’, ‘autumn leaves’, ‘white Christmas’ or other events that the rest of the Japanese enjoy, so I never had a chance to like anything but summer...
I decided to draw a summer’s night with fireworks reflected in the surface of water. The sea, a yukata kimono, fireworks, a shrine, all these things that I wanted to draw derive from the scenery of my childhood when the sky was full of fireflies, so I have included all my memories in this picture. |

Haru kaze no okurimono (Present from the Spring Wind)
The subject is Japan's four seasons so I have used my favorite theme...spring. Blooming blossom, petals scattering on the wind, and petals covering the ground, each of these has its own heart and meaning. This is what I love about Japan.
I think that anthropomorphism is a part of the wonderful culture that developed in Japan and so I have decided to draw a mermaid who is half goldfish. I imagined a rendezvous scene,in which the goldfish girl will be able to be reunited with her lover in the spring.
I hope that you will be able to find a feeling of the warmth, joy and anticipation of spring within this picture. |

The subject this time was ‘Japan’s four seasons’ so I chose to Illustrate the ‘coming of age’ ceremony at the beginning of the year.
The subject is ‘a girl who has become tipsy after drinking her first cup of sake upon becoming an adult’.
The girl in the background is already drunk, and I have tried to depict the bright atmosphere of the coming of age ceremony.
Every year when I see the girls in their colorful kimonos and the boys in their hakamas, I think, 'that is the end of the New Year holidays, I hope all you young adults do your best!’ |

In the old days people used to float lanterns down the rivers but this was not good for the environment so for about the last 10,500 years they have been floated out into space instead. The spirits of the dead float along the Milky Way and return to the sea of stars. Today it is rare to find somebody who was actually born on Earth so most people do not think of the Earth's oceans as being a place to which they should return.
This year the ceremony is to be performed in the skies over Earth for a change. We found an Earth-born shrine maiden and our preparations are all complete. Furthermore, we have prepared special seats for all of you who are reading this. Please step this way. It is a truly special seat for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I have no idea why, but human souls have been clinging to Earth for 18,000 years and now is our chance to release them back to space. By so doing we will be able to cleanse mother Earth of its impurity and allow mother Earth to finally be reborn. |

Hello, my name is Setsuna and I am half of Tinkle.
We are very happy to have been invited to take part in the Eshi 100 exhibition again.
Once more we have used the theme of ‘Japan’ for our illustration. Last time we used blue as the base color to portray the transient aspect of Japanese girls, and their fleeting beauty. This time we have used gold as the image color to depict the beautiful, golden, flamboyant prettiness of old Japan.
I will be very happy if you are able to catch an image of an unrequited wish amid what appears at first glance to be a world of gorgeous beauty and the ‘whole-hearted desire’ of a beautiful Japanese girl. |

Apparently the four seasons are unique to Japan. Spring, summer autumn, winter, it was difficult to make up my mind which to draw...so I decided to use all four, mixed together. Apart from the four seasons, what else is unique to Japan? ...Yes, manga and anime culture! One image in this field that I think is familiar to everybody is, ‘ahegao and double peace’. How about it? Do you get it? That’s right! A double peace sign—in other words, ‘four’. My God! It’s a miracle! Sorry...it was rather a poor pun.
This time I carried out all the coloring and finishing myself. I hope you enjoy the different textures presented by the character, flowers, ice candy, muffler and falling leaves...that’s what I was thinking as I finished this...so how about it...?...What do you think...?
In closing I would like to say how grateful I am to have been offered this tremendous opportunity twice. I hope there will be a third...! |

Kitsune men (Fox Mask)
I am delighted to have been invited to take part in both the first and now the second Eshi 100 Exhibitions! The theme this year is ‘The Four Seasons of Japan’ and I found it difficult to make up my mind what to draw (-_-;). However, all the time I was thinking about it I had an image in the back of my mind of a fox mask, yukata kimono (summer festivals) and foxfire. The problem was how to express these in my own way. A dreamlike festival... a torii shrine gateway standing in a forest, surrounded by foxfire resembling the light of fireflies... I could not make up my mind what to do, but my main images of foxes were the ‘foxes wedding procession’ and the Inari Shrine in Fushimi so in the end I decided to mix these two to create the background.
Naturally the 1,000 torii in the rear of the scene are not really those belonging to the Inari Shrine, they are the gateway to another world. We can see the foxes' wedding procession behind the girl... she has removed her mask and is looking back with a warning in her eye, as if to say, ‘if you come any further, you will be unable to return’. The fox mask with the shining eyes is looking our way as if inviting us into its world. |

Spring!
The theme for this exhibition is the four seasons and there is a subject that I had wanted to draw for a long time. That is the feeling of youth, of fresh greenery budding in spring, an impression of weakness to external pressure but with the power of rapid growth to overcome it. This is how I feel every spring when I look at the view outside my room; for me, the spring season is summed up by an image of pale new leaves.
That is why I wanted to draw a picture of this moment of release from the restraint of winter but as a result, the picture looks rather too wholesome. It just turned out that way...
Isn't the power of youth great? I do not mean for the way in which it can be forced into any shape you like. It may be the fault of the sunlight shining through leaves, but it feels so bright that I am forced to close my eyes. |

The new year begins in January, but April marks the beginning of a new term or a new school year; it is the time when a new school life begins at junior or senior high school, and therefore I think of it as being a season filled with hope and dreams. When I was given ‘The Four Seasons of Japan’ as a subject, I wanted to depict a scene that would make people think of this kind of bright future and so I started to draw this. I particularly like the contrast between the pink of the cherry blossom, the blue of the spring skies and the red of the satchel.丨 will be very happy if the people who see this are put in a bright mood and think, ‘how cute’. |

Haru ni naru yo (It Will Soon be Spring)
I am not pretending to be energy conscious, but for the last couple of years I have not used the air conditioning in either summer or winter. People say that recently they don’t really feel the seasons, but this is simply because they 'prevent themselves from feeling them’. In actual fact, summer is still extremely hot and winter mornings are cold enough to make you numb. It is very enjoyable to feel indignant about this heat or cold and it seems a waste to lose this opportunity.
The passing of the seasons is like scenery that is watched through the window of a train. There may be a sight you would like to look at more closely but the train will carry on regardless, maybe even to enter a tunnel. When that happens, the passengers still remain gazing blankly out of the window.
I believe that the true essence of the beauty of the four seasons lies in the way that they pass daily, never halting. It is when they actually change from one to the next, that is most interesting. If I had the choice I would like to have the time to watch these minute daily changes a little more closely. |

I love spring, as it is the season that stands at a turning point in the lives of various people. I feel it is a time when dramas, large and small, occur in all kinds of places. In this year’s illustration I have portrayed a girl who has summoned up all the courage she possesses in her tiny body to set off on a trip. For the background I have used ‘Okoba’ station in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. When my mother left home to get a job, she traveled by steam train for half a day from Miyazaki to Kumamoto and this was the station where she paused for a rest. She says that the cherry blossom there made a strong impression on her. |
